Something like a US version of the autonomous squares of Christiania or Exarchia, the shared rowdiness of these happenings instilled a sense of solidarity and togetherness which at times felt like being in a riot...But the parties disappeared little trace, aside from a police-tolerated flea market ringing the park’s fountain, mostly selling pre-rolled joints and streetwear, some pieces emblazoned with images of NYPD vans burning the previous summer."
